No Matter When You’re Selling – Check Your Stairwell!
I can’t tell you how many times I see the lonely stairwell that has been neglected. The whole house has been decluttered, cleaned and staged while the stairwell has been forgotten.
The immediate problem with a dirty stairwell is that it’s a giant funnel that directs rainwater to the drain that’s connected to the sump pump. Often times the force of the rain moves the dirt and debris to the top of the drain where it can totally block the openings. Once this happens the water has no other choice but accumulate. Hopefully, never enough to seep under the basement door. If it does, you now have wet carpet and all that goes with it.
Cleaning the stairs and landing is easier then you may think. Spray it down with a bleach solution in a garden sprayer, give it some time to work it’s magic and then hose it down, being sure to collect the loosen crud that is coming off before it makes it to the drain. When you’re done you will be pleased with the results and the peace of mind that comes with a clean stairwell.
